Zaynab El Bernoussi

Zaynab is assistant professor of international politics at Sciences Po Rabat of the International University of Rabat (UIR). She holds a master’s in finance from Instituto de Empresa, an MPA in economic development from Columbia University, and a PhD in political and social sciences from the Catholic University of Louvain. She was a doctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a visiting scholar at Smith College and Harvard University. She is part of the executive committee of the Global South Caucus of the International Studies Association (ISA). Her work focuses on the politicization of dignity when looking at South-South cooperation, bioethical issues, and human and economic development programs. In this project, Zaynab is focusing on Sino-Arab bilateral relations as they contribute to the halal economy: What does such growth do to Sino-Arab cooperation and what are the greater implications for South-South cooperation in the global political economy and for the international order? The focus on halal cooperation here also aims to evaluate two implications of the Sino-Arab cooperation: 1) state-control of trade as it challenges neoliberal convergence in the global political economy; 2) ethics in international relations particularly regarding what appears to be a civilizational approach in Sino-Arab relations. Zaynab is the author of the book, Dignity in the Egyptian Revolution, Demands and Protests, Cambridge University Press, 2021.
